Artist's Description
Mārahau is a celebration of mixed heritage, cultural identity and the strength of whakapapa. Inspired by his Māori and Dutch roots, this contemporary illustration brings together traditional Māori adornments and hand-painted botanical details, reflecting the beauty of belonging to two cultures.
Wearing the family kākahu (cloak), Mārahau carries a proud connection to his Māori heritage. His adornments include a traditional heru (comb), treasured huia and amokura feathers, a pounamu earring and hand-painted native tītoki berries. Historically, tītoki berries were valued for their fragrant oil, which was used to scent and dress the hair, including that of Māori warriors. Their rich colour and natural beauty add another meaningful layer to Mārahau's story.
Mārahau is the younger brother of Pīata, his companion print, and the older brother of Poto. All three siblings wear the same tāniko-inspired pattern on their attire, creating a beautiful visual connection through their shared whakapapa, heritage and whānau.
Together, these artworks celebrate the richness of mixed heritage and the bonds of family, reminding us that identity can be shaped by more than one culture while remaining deeply connected to our roots.
Perfect for multicultural whānau, contemporary New Zealand homes, children's spaces and anyone who values Māori-inspired artwork celebrating heritage, identity and belonging.
