Artist's Description
At first glance, it’s playful and striking. But look closer, and you’ll discover the deeper narrative hidden in the detail. Reflected in the Tiki’s eyes are two of the East Coast’s most sacred landmarks — Mount Hikurangi, the first place in Aotearoa to greet the rising sun, and the flowing Waiapu River, lifeblood of the region and rich in ancestral significance.
Named after the small settlement of Tikitiki in Tairāwhiti, this piece honours the land, the people, and the spirit of the East Coast. It’s where whakapapa, whenua, and modern visual storytelling collide — celebrating not just Māori design, but a deep sense of place and pride.
