This portrait gracefully weaves together Māori, English, and Portuguese ancestry in a powerful visual statement of identity, legacy, and pride. Read more in the Artist's Description below. Hine-Āahua is a young wahine who wears her moko kauae with strength and dignity — a sacred mark of Māori womanhood, deeply rooted in whakapapa and Maoritanga. Her pounamu (greenstone) earrings, passed down from her grandmother, symbolise mana, connection, and protection.
Her Victorian collar and pearl brooch gently acknowledge her English lineage, while the rich red tones in her clothing reflect her Portuguese background — a heritage further echoed in her middle name, Évora, inspired by the historic southern Portuguese town. Her warm hazel eyes and medium-toned complexion reflect a mixed genealogy shared by many in Aotearoa today.
This portrait is not just beautiful — it’s real. A reflection of what it means to hold multiple identities and walk proudly in both tradition and modernity.
